Friends, how many of us have them?
We all know the classic Whodini tune, but in the modern world, the lines between online followers and genuine friends are blurring. This week, we explore how to turn those online connections into real-life bonds.
In this episode,Morgane speaks with Dani Moore, the inspiring creator of the Black Women Make Friends in Kansas City (BWMFKC) Facebook group and social handles, about the power of building genuine friendships starting online. The two dive into the importance of friendship as adults, creating connections with Black women in a sisterly nature and moving their online friendships offline.
Finding Your Tribe: Online Platforms for Making Friends
Joining a social media group with like-minded people is a solid entry point to making friends. Much like the BWMFKC, it was formed based on people with shared experiences. Facebook, Reddit, Discord, and Meetups are some places to seek out groups socially. This is a good place to find like-minded people if you are connected to a church or other organization, like a sorority.
Once you’ve joined the group, explore a few posts and see how people naturally interact. You can introduce yourself and share things about yourself to make connections within some groups. Or there may be side chats you can join to connect with a more niche group of people within that group. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and post or comment on other posts.
Moving from the intro post, if your group has meetups, join them. Our guest, Dani, believes her group is merely a jumping point to meaningful friendships. She highly recommends taking the virtual meetup IRL (in real life). In BWMFKC, there are a variety of chats and events allowing members to make meaningful connections.
So you’ve met up with a few people in your community group. Now what? The true test of friendship begins. Much like dating, you likely won’t instantly connect. It will take some time for that ultimate friendship vibe. Consistency is key. Regular communication, whether a quick message or engaging in group activities, helps solidify those initial connections. Showing up for meetups and events demonstrates your commitment to building the friendship.
