Fall is the New January: Four Tips to Crush Your End-of-Year Goals

Remember that “new year, new me” feeling we all get on January 1st? Well, what if I told you that September is the new January? I’m not crazy, just hear me out! It’s that back-to-school energy mixed with the crisp fall air that makes you feel like anything is possible. If you’re ready to get things done, here are four tips to help ensure your goals can be achieved with effective end-of-the-year goal setting.

1. First, Find Your ‘Why’ (The Real, Deep Down Reason)

Before you even think about setting a new goal, ask yourself why you want to do it. For me, it’s about learning a couple of Christmas songs on the keyboard. Why? Because I want to see my daughter’s face light up when I play for her. Getting clear on your why will keep you motivated when the going gets tough.

2. Shrink the Goal, Sis: Practice the Art of Starting Small

The idea of starting a new routine can be intimidating, especially with only a few months left in the year. The key is to start small. I’m a busy mom of a little one under two, so committing to a whole hour of practice every day is just not realistic. Instead, I’ve committed to just 10 minutes a day. Small, consistent steps will always lead to big results toward your Q4 goals.

3. Get Consistent with an Accountability Partner

This is the secret sauce to staying on track. An accountability partner, a checklist, a vision board—whatever works for you. Just find a system that keeps you honest and on top of your goals. My friend and I have monthly check-ins to make sure we’re still on track. It makes all the difference.

4. Be Real About the Time You Have (You’re Not Alicia Keys… Yet!)

Let’s get real for a second. You’re not going to lose 50 pounds or, for me, become the next Alicia Keys in four months. But you can start moving your body more consistently or learn a couple of new songs. Be realistic about what you can achieve in this last quarter. It’s about progress, not perfection.

As we head into fall, let that newness wash over you and inspire you to do something amazing for yourself. Embrace the sweater weather, the cozy jammies, and the scent of that butternut squash chili I’m ready to cook up (fall veggies are my love language, okay?).

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to sip my hot apple cider and get in my 10 minutes of keyboard practice. Let’s do the thing!
